The History of Harajuku Decora Fashion by FRUiTS Magazine
FRUiTS Magazine founder Shoichi Aoki is crowdfunding (IndieGoGo) a new photo book on the history Harajuku’s decora subculture. Aoki was there in the 1990s when decora was born and he has documented this subculture ever since.
We’ve been shooting on the streets of Harajuku for 10+ years now and we are still excited when we see Aoki out taking photos. FRUiTS has staff now, but the founder also still does some street shooting himself.
It might be an overstatement to say that Harajuku wouldn’t be famous without FRUiTS, but an argument could be made. International celebrities of the 1990s - who would later help to promote Harajuku to the world - first heard of the Harajuku fashion scene through FRUiTS Magazine (available at Tower Records in the United States and some other countries).
Even just to show thanks for someone who has dedicated his life to documenting and promoting Harajuku culture, we definitely think this is something worth supporting. Some of the rewards are signed decora photos by Shoichi Aoki, so there’s that too.
